SUMMARY:Biodynamic Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:Biodynamic Beekeeping\nFriday\, October 4th\, 7 – 8:30 pm\, and Saturday\, October 5th\, 9 am – 5 pm.\nJoin us Friday evening for an introductory lecture on the overarching approach of biodynamic beekeeping\, a meditative path of inquiry into the life of the honeybee. This talk is open to the public for a small fee\, but included for those attending Saturday’s full-day workshop. \nSaturday will include some classroom time: immersing in the life of the bee through the wheel of the year\, preparing for overwintering\, learning about necessary equipment and site preparation for the spring\, and learning how to best support the honeybee in her natural rhythms. We’ll also visit the hives in the Pfeiffer Garden for an up close and personal experience with the bees.  \nOur workshop is for folks looking to deepen their understanding of the honeybee\, and is open to current beekeepers and those still dreaming. \n  \nPresenter: Alex Tuchman \nDirector\, Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary \nAlex is a beekeeper\, educator\, farmer\, author\, and student of nature. As the Director of Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary\, Alex carries a wide variety of responsibilities on the farm\, with the bees\, in the classroom\, and in administration. Alex arrived at Spikenard Farm in March of 2014 after three years as the Farm Manager of Loyola University Chicago’s Student Farm in Woodstock\, Illinois\, his home-state. Alex is an active member and the co-leader of the Agriculture Section of the School for Spiritual Science and a consistent contributor to the biodynamic agriculture and natural beekeeping movements and regularly teaches at conferences in the U.S.\, around the world\, and online. Alex’s book\, A Lively Hive\, was published in 2021\, outlining the basic biodynamic beekeeping methods that are practiced and taught at Spikenard Farm.

SUMMARY:Conscious Beekeeping: Practical Organic Approaches for Healthy Bees and Growing Apiaries
DESCRIPTION:With Bill Day\nWhat can beekeepers do to help our bees thrive and flourish? Starting from a consideration of the honeybee colony from the biodynamic point of view\, we will look at swarming as an expression of the bees’ vitality • healthy rhythms of life in the hive\, and how to support them • learning to discern when to intervene and when to let your bees work out their problems on their own • working with top bar and Warré hives • the Varroa mite • and more. \nAmple time will be left for discussion and questions. Weather permitting\, we’ll visit the Pfeiffer Center’s apiary\, where techniques discussed in the classroom will be demonstrated. \nBeginning beekeepers are encouraged to also attend Friday’s half-day introductory workshop. \nBill Day has been keeping bees for fifteen years. He is the beekeeper and beekeeping instructor at the Pfeiffer Center\, and also keeps bees at Bluefield Farm in Blauvelt\, NY. \nTHIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN POSTPONED. SUMMARY:Beekeeping for the Future
DESCRIPTION:With Bill Day\nIf you are thinking about getting honeybees next spring\, now is the time to prepare. This one-day workshop will address questions all aspiring beekeepers need to ask as they prepare to embark on this spiritual yet profoundly nature-bound journey. For beekeepers with one or two years’ experience\, this workshop is a great opportunity to take stock\, ask questions\, and learn new perspectives. \nThe workshop will be organized around the beekeeper’s essential role in nurturing the hive organism. What can we as beekeepers do to create conditions in which our bees can thrive? What are the most up-to-date natural and holistic methods\, and how do they work? \nTopics covered will include: the biology of the hive organism and the beekeeper’s role in fostering healthy hives; working with different hive designs; sources of bees; siting your hives; biodynamic methods for managing varroa and other health issues; record keeping; beekeeping as a path to heightened powers of observation and awareness; and much more. \nThe day will include a visit to the Pfeiffer Center’s apiary. Weather permitting\, we will open a hive and demonstrate techniques discussed in the classroom. \nBill Day has been keeping bees for fifteen years. He is the beekeeper and beekeeping instructor at the Pfeiffer Center\, and also keeps bees at Bluefield Farm in Blauvelt\, NY.

SUMMARY:Preparing Your Hives for Winter
DESCRIPTION:With Bill Day\nLabor Day to Thanksgiving is the time to make sure your hives have everything they need to survive the winter months and meet the spring ready to build up and thrive. \nIn this half-day workshop\, Pfeiffer Center beekeeper Bill Day will share his checklist for winter readiness\, the reasoning behind it\, and how to apply it. Weather permitting\, most of our time will be spent at the hives in the Pfeiffer Center garden. \nYou will leave this workshop with clear guidelines for evaluating your hives\, and steps to take to prepare them for the coming winter. \nBill Day has been keeping bees for fifteen years. He is the beekeeper and beekeeping instructor at the Pfeiffer Center\, and also keeps bees at Bluefield Farm in Blauvelt\, NY.

SUMMARY:Conscious Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:With Bill Day\nThe growing popularity of small-scale beekeeping is good news for the bees\, but it also raises its own set of challenges. Rarely does a small-scale beekeeper encounter Colony Collapse — but every beekeeper must contend with Varroa mites\, scant forage\, and scarce high-quality package bees and nucs. \nWhat can we do to help our bees thrive and flourish? Starting from an understanding of the honeybee colony as an organism unlike any other found in nature\, we will consider: Swarming as an expression of the bees’ vitality • healthy rhythms of life in the hive\, and how to support them • when to intervene and when to let your bees manage on their own • increasing your apiary naturally with splits and swarms while breeding better\, locally-adapted queens • alternative hive designs • managing Varroa • and more. \nWeather permitting\, we’ll visit the Pfeiffer Center’s apiary\, where techniques discussed in the classroom will be demonstrated. \nBeginning beekeepers are strongly encouraged to attend the optional Friday afternoon beginner’s workshop. \nBill Day first learned beekeeping from Gunther Hauk as an intern at the Pfeiffer Center in 2001-02. He is the Pfeiffer Center’s beekeeper and beekeeping instructor. He also keeps bees at Bluefield Farm in Blauvelt\, NY.
