SUMMARY:Midwinter Agriculture Intensive: The Four Elements and the Farm Individuality
DESCRIPTION:With Mac Mead\, Megan Durney\, Cynthia Hoven\, Harald Hoven\, Kim Pace\, Sea-Anna Vasilas\, and Sherry Wildfeuer\nThis year’s Midwinter Agriculture Intensive will explore the cosmic and earthly expressions of the four elements by illuminating the interweaving forces of Earth\, Water\, Air\, and Fire: how they manifest in polarities and what is born in between. The art and practice of eurythmy is interwoven throughout the program to provide an artistic lens through which we can actually experience spiritual content and truths. \nThrough our personal experiences\, group conversations\, and presentations\, we hope to shine light on the unseen forces and relationships that influence the cycle of the seasons\, the metamorphosis of the plant\, the four kingdoms\, the work of the nature spirits\, and the biodynamic preparations. \nThis long weekend is truly a unique educational and social opportunity to broaden and deepen your understanding of the role of biodynamics in the development of humanity and agriculture. Join us! \nSchedule\n \nFaculty\nMAC MEAD\, a biodynamic farmer since 1975\, mentors the Pfeiffer Center and Duryea Farm Leadership Team and is lead faculty of the Pfeiffer Center’s adult education programs. Mac regularly speaks at conferences of the Biodynamic Association (BDA)\, the Northeast Organic Farming Association\, and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture. In 2016\, he was an invited speaker at “The Spirit of Sustainable Agriculture\,” a conference of the Harvard Divinity School. \nMEGAN DURNEY coordinates the daily work of the Pfeiffer Center and Duryea Farm\, and is an instructor in the Pfeiffer Center’s One-Year Part-Time Training in Biodynamics. A Biodynamic Association board member\, Megan has served on the core planning group for the BDA’s national conference\, conducted workshops at BDA national conferences\, and hosted many young farmer meet-ups. Megan joined the Pfeiffer Center as an intern in 2006 and became a staff member in 2010. In 2014-15\, she studied seed saving under Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks\, CA. \nCYNTHIA HOVEN has worked as a eurythmy teacher\, performer\, and therapist for over 35 years. Her work has also included in-depth teaching of biodynamic students and practitioners in collaborative workshops with her husband. She worked as a key professor at Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks\, CA\, for over 25 years\, where she also founded and directed a full-time eurythmy training program. She now offers extensive workshops in China\, Taiwan\, Guatemala\, and elsewhere. \nHARALD HOVEN founded and ran Raphael Garden at Rudolf Steiner College (Fair Oaks\, CA) from 1987 to 2007. There he trained close to 100 apprentices\, created a seed-saving and breeding program\, established biodynamic adult education at RSC\, and operated a year-round 70-member CSA. Since his retirement from RSC in 2017 he has consulted for\, trained\, and mentored biodynamic farmers in the US and abroad\, focusing on preparation making and biodynamic practices. \nKIM PACE manages the Duryea Farm dairy\, in addition to supporting all aspects of farm operations at the Pfeiffer Center and Duryea Farm. Kim first met biodynamics while studying under Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks\, CA. In 2016\, Kim stepped away from Waldorf kindergarten teaching to become a full-time apprentice at Raphael Garden\, followed by a stint at Fulcrum Farm in Grass Valley\, CA\, where she helped tend a small herd of Scottish Highland cows. \nSEA-ANNA VASILAS has been teaching eurythmy internationally since 2011\, after graduating from the four-year eurythmy training at Eurythmy Spring Valley in Spring Valley\, NY. She first encountered eurythmy through her work with biodynamic agriculture and has continually been inspired by the living relationship between biodynamics and eurythmy. Sea-Anna earned her M.A. in performance eurythmy from Alanus University\, and is currently a member of the Eurythmy Spring Valley faculty and ensemble. \nSHERRY WILDFEUER is the editor of the Stella Natura Biodynamic Planting Calendar\, a co-worker at Camphill Village Kimberton Hills\, PA\, and a long-time active member of the Anthroposophical Society and the Agriculture Section of the School of Spiritual Science. \nReading\nRudolf Steiner\, The Agriculture Course\, Lectures 1\, 2\,  and 4.\nRudolf Steiner\, “The Christmas Imagination\,” Lecture 2 from Four Seasons and the Archangels.\nRudolf Steiner\, Man as Symphony of the Creative Word\, Lecture 7. \nMeals and Lodging\nThe registration fee includes five meals at Threefold Café: Dinner on Saturday and Sunday\, and lunch on Saturday\, Sunday\, and Monday. SUMMARY:Beekeeping for the Future
DESCRIPTION:With Bill Day\nIf you are thinking about getting honeybees next spring\, now is the time to prepare. This one-day workshop will address questions all aspiring beekeepers need to ask as they prepare to embark on this spiritual yet profoundly nature-bound journey. For beekeepers with one or two years’ experience\, this workshop is a great opportunity to take stock\, ask questions\, and learn new perspectives. \nThe workshop will be organized around the beekeeper’s essential role in nurturing the hive organism. What can we as beekeepers do to create conditions in which our bees can thrive? What are the most up-to-date natural and holistic methods\, and how do they work? \nTopics covered will include: the biology of the hive organism and the beekeeper’s role in fostering healthy hives; working with different hive designs; sources of bees; siting your hives; biodynamic methods for managing varroa and other health issues; record keeping; beekeeping as a path to heightened powers of observation and awareness; and much more. \nThe day will include a visit to the Pfeiffer Center’s apiary. Weather permitting\, we will open a hive and demonstrate techniques discussed in the classroom. \nBill Day has been keeping bees for fifteen years. He is the beekeeper and beekeeping instructor at the Pfeiffer Center\, and also keeps bees at Bluefield Farm in Blauvelt\, NY.

Weather permitting\, most of our time will be spent at the hives in the Pfeiffer Center garden. \nYou will leave this workshop with clear guidelines for evaluating your hives\, and steps to take to prepare them for the coming winter. \nBill Day has been keeping bees for fifteen years. He is the beekeeper and beekeeping instructor at the Pfeiffer Center\, and also keeps bees at Bluefield Farm in Blauvelt\, NY.

SUMMARY:Bread Baking Workshop: The Search for the Holy Grain
DESCRIPTION:With Koen Van Der Meer\nSaturday\, June 8\, 7:30-9:00pmSunday\, June 9\, 8:30am-1:00pm \nExplore the future of bread as a life-giving substance and support for a new consciousness! \nIn this hands-on workshop\, Koen Van Der Meer will introduce and guide us in the baking of a new kind of bread\, made with Ordeum® malted barley leaven. The workshop will also include a presentation on the esoteric history of bread\, from Zarathustra to Melchizedek to Christ.  \nParticipants will leave with loaves that they have created and baked in the Pfeiffer Center’s wood-fired oven. In addition to working with legacy grains such as spelt and rye\, Koen will also experiment for the first time with Pfeiffer Wheat flour\, a new grain developed from research begun by Ehrenfried Pfeiffer in 1930. \nMaterials and equipment\, plus a snack and light lunch on Sunday\, are included in the workshop fee. This workshop is appropriate for all skill levels; while no previous baking experience is necessary\, participants will learn techniques and skills that are applicable to any kind of baking. \nKoen van der Meer has operated several natural foods bakeries in the Netherlands and the USA\, starting in 1977. In 1981\, while searching for an alternative to both yeast and sourdough bread\, Koen began to use a leaven made from dried and sprouted organic barley\, which has an abundance of enzymes that help to break down gluten. Using this leaven with grains such as spelt and rye\, which are not degenerated like modern wheat\, results in a bread that many gluten-sensitive people are able to eat.
