SUMMARY:Soil\, Compost\, Cover Crops & Seed Saving Basics
DESCRIPTION:Soil\, Compost\, Cover Crops & Seed Saving Basics\nOn a biodynamic farm we strive to create from the farm what the farm needs to thrive into the future. Building soil through cover-cropping\, making and applying your own compost\, and saving your own seeds supports a developing farm individually. In the classroom\, Mac Mead explores the relationship of soil science and spiritual science. In the garden\, we handle composts of different materials and maturities\, build compost piles\, make potting soil mix\, and treat compost piles with the biodynamic preparations. Megan Durney presents hands-on seed saving basics; vital knowledge for the future of our food supply and the health of our farms and communities. \n  \nSoil\, Compost\, Cover Crops & Seed Saving Basics 2025 RegistrationPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Name *FirstLastPreferred pronounsEmail *Phone *Address *Address Line 1Address Line 2City--- Select state ---AlabamaAlaskaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingStateZip CodeWhere did you hear about this course? *Terms *I have read\, understood and hereby agree to the terms below *Cancellation / Refund Policy: \nIf cancellations are made at least 2 weeks before the workshop\, registrants can choose a refund (less a $10 administrative fee) or full credit toward a future workshop. SUMMARY:Large Animals and the Farm Organism
DESCRIPTION:Large Animals & The Farm Organism\nThe ideal biodynamic farm is a self-contained individuality to which cows contribute milk\, meat\, and soil fertility. Megan Durney shares about the essential nature of the animal\, and Kim Vaughan covers the basics of biodynamic dairy herd management\, including rotational grazing and pasture management. The day includes a visit to our herd\, cow barn\, and dairy\, the only one in Rockland County. \nAs Farm Manager\, Megan coordinates the daily work on our farm\, and is an instructor in our One-Year Part-Time Training. She takes a leading role in planning and carrying out our annual Plant Sale and each season’s vegetable production. She directs our seed saving\, herb growing\, and herbal product production\, manages our CSA\, Farm Stand\, and sales to other outlets. Megan is a board member of the Nature Institute and Biodynamic Demeter Alliance (BDA). Megan joined the Pfeiffer Center as an intern in 2006\, and became a staff member in 2010. In 2014-2015\, she studied seed saving under Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks\, CA. \nAs Herdsperson and Dairy Manager\, Kim heads up the only dairy herd in Rockland County. In addition to supporting all aspects of farm operations and administration\, she is an active member of the Fellowship Community’s Administrative Circle and Community Council. Kim first met biodynamics at a year-long course with Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks\, CA. She soon joined their CSA and became a star volunteer\, serving on the steering committee\, organizing fundraisers\, and milking the cows on weekends. In 2016\, Kim stepped away from Waldorf kindergarten teaching to become a full-time apprentice at Raphael Garden\, followed by a summer at Fulcrum Farm in Grass Valley\, CA\, where she helped tend a small herd of Scottish Highland cows.

SUMMARY:Biodynamic Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:Biodynamic Beekeeping\nFriday\, October 4th\, 7 – 8:30 pm\, and Saturday\, October 5th\, 9 am – 5 pm.\nJoin us Friday evening for an introductory lecture on the overarching approach of biodynamic beekeeping\, a meditative path of inquiry into the life of the honeybee. This talk is open to the public for a small fee\, but included for those attending Saturday’s full-day workshop. \nSaturday will include some classroom time: immersing in the life of the bee through the wheel of the year\, preparing for overwintering\, learning about necessary equipment and site preparation for the spring\, and learning how to best support the honeybee in her natural rhythms. We’ll also visit the hives in the Pfeiffer Garden for an up close and personal experience with the bees.  \nOur workshop is for folks looking to deepen their understanding of the honeybee\, and is open to current beekeepers and those still dreaming. \n  \nPresenter: Alex Tuchman \nDirector\, Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary \nAlex is a beekeeper\, educator\, farmer\, author\, and student of nature. As the Director of Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary\, Alex carries a wide variety of responsibilities on the farm\, with the bees\, in the classroom\, and in administration. Alex arrived at Spikenard Farm in March of 2014 after three years as the Farm Manager of Loyola University Chicago’s Student Farm in Woodstock\, Illinois\, his home-state. Alex is an active member and the co-leader of the Agriculture Section of the School for Spiritual Science and a consistent contributor to the biodynamic agriculture and natural beekeeping movements and regularly teaches at conferences in the U.S.\, around the world\, and online. Alex’s book\, A Lively Hive\, was published in 2021\, outlining the basic biodynamic beekeeping methods that are practiced and taught at Spikenard Farm.

SUMMARY:Biodynamics & Earth Evolution / Autumn Tasks
DESCRIPTION:Biodynamics & Earth Evolution / Autumn Tasks\nMac Mead introduces biodynamics in the context of the spiritual-scientific understanding of earth evolution. In the garden\, we do hands-on work with the horn manure preparation\, transplanting\, raised beds\, and planting cover crops. \nMac mentors Threefold Community Farm staff and interns. Mac began farming in 1975\, when he had the “privilege and good fortune” to learn biodynamic methods directly from former co-workers of biodynamic pioneer Ehrenfried Pfeiffer at the Fellowship Community. In 2006\, Mac became the Program Director of the Pfeiffer Center. The core instructor of our One-Year Part-Time Training\, Mac regularly speaks at conferences of the Biodynamic Association (BDA)\, the Northeast Organic Farming Association\, and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture. In 2016\, he was an invited speaker at “The Spirit of Sustainable Agriculture\,” a conference of the Harvard Divinity School.
