What is the right relationship between humans and honeybees? Drawing on Jennie Durant’s “Bitter Honey: A Political Ecology of Honey Bee Declines” and other recent research, the Pfeiffer Center beekeeper Bill Day will begin the day by examining the history and current state of the honeybee in relation to the household of nature in North America. What can the story of humans, honeybees, and agriculture in America teach us? The answers may surprise you.

Next we will cover how to assess your hives for winter readiness, and how to address typical late-season issues. After a classroom review, we will visit the Pfeiffer Center garden to open some hives and practice what we discussed.

After lunch, we will walk to one of the beeyards in Threefold Community Farm for an open conversation about all things beekeeping.

There will be ample time for discussion throughout the day. Please bring your questions and observations!
